BUSINESS ENGLISH WORD OF THE DAY: GLOBALIZED

BUSINESS ENGLISH WORD OF THE DAY: GLOBALIZED

French translation is mondialisé

Hello Darlings! Happy Monday!

Today's word of the day is globalized. If we were having a conversation, you and I, where could we take the conversation? I guess in so many different directions.

A Bag for a Global Thinker
The world is definitely globalized in the sense that the whole world is interconnected through business, environment, health, finance, nuclear proliferation, trade, entertainment, fashion, and language, among other things. In a globalized world, English has emerged as the lingua franca that connects the whole world and allows us to be able to communicate more easily. But is globalization sustainable in a world filled with nationalist ideologies and protectionist governments bent on securing their borders from "outsiders"? I wonder.

I find that this word can lead to very heated debates and conversations and to an extent, maybe I avoid it. Because I want my English conversations to be happy and fun and not too heavy and serious for the learners; or for myself. But can we avoid this word? I don't think so. What do you think about the globalized world in which we currently exist? Do you think this trend will continue or will nations pull back and break up the trend towards more global cooperation? Does your company operate globally or are you simply a local business? What challenges do you face as an employee, working in an increasingly globalized work environment? Is language ever an impediment for you when having to communicate with international collaborators? What do you think about English being the language that is used in this "globalized" international system? Is it fair that English is the lingua franca? Should other languages be used? Do you fear that English is going to take over your own native language and replace your language sometime in the future? Do you think English is the root of Globalization or that Globalization is the root of the emergence of English as the international language?

Like I said, this word can be a very complicated one to maneuver in conversation. But it is definitely not a word any of us can ignore because we are increasingly connected and what happens to one part of the world quickly impacts the rest of the world. You just have to look at the financial meltdown in 2008 and the Coronavirus outbreak in 2020 to see that we are living in a "globalized" era and chances are, there is no going backwards from here. We will only become more, not less, interconnected and more globalized than ever imagined.
