BUSINESS ENGLISH WORD OF THE DAY: TELECOMMUTING

The word of the Day is TELECOMMUTING

French translation télétravail

TELECOMMUTING IS THE NEW NORMAL WORLDWIDE AS COMPANIES SCRAMBLE TO STEM THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS

Hello Darlings! Happy Wednesday!

I hope you are doing as well as you can under the circumstances.
Today's Business English Paris word of the day is TELECOMMUTING. (There is a video of this word of the day on my Instagram feed @businessenglishparis

The working lives of people all over the world has been drastically changed because of the coronavirus outbreak. Many people are forced to "telecommute" to their jobs.
Some people like it, but telecommuting can be very difficult for some people especially those who like to have social interaction with their colleagues, and who need to have a certain routine in order to be "productive." Are you the type of employee who works well in a telecommuting scenario? Can you function without having the office and the colleagues right down the hall? Or do you need to go in to the office to feel productive and get things done.

Where telecommuting is concerned, it is a question of discipline, I think. As Editor of Business English Paris, I am not a stranger to the telecommuting model. I like it, except if it is imposed. I think that some people are just better at planning out their work day and being self-directed and self-disciplined, and other people not so much; and if you are not able to practice self-discipline and get things done at home, telecommuting could be a huge disaster.

Which type are you? Why do you think so?

With the coronavirus fiasco have you found yourself telecommuting by necessity or by order of your bosses? How do you feel about telecommuting, personally? What about things like your computer. Do you find that you are able to access your cloud files and other files as easily at home as you do at the office? Are they glitches? Is everything slower? Tell the truth, do you get bored working at home? Do you feel lazy and lost? Do you pig out all day? Do the kids and spouse drive you crazy? Do you prefer to go in to the office? Or are you having a grand old time at home and feeling all glamourous and chic in your home office? I want to know your story.

This week in Vogue, former supermodel Cindy Crawford was pictured in her home office as she telecommuted and encouraged everyone else to stay home and avoid going in to the office.

She definitely made telecommuting look sexy and cool as she flung her legs up on her desk which had a beautiful bouquet of red roses on. The home office was textbook, and looked like it came out of a magazine ad. Surely most people who telecommute don't have home offices that look so chic as Cindy's. But it's all good. You can still get stuff done if you just stay organized.

So yea. Let's talk. I offer English courses for "telecommuting" professionals on the phone using mobile phone and WhatsApp. I would love to discuss this topic and many others with you. Get in contact if you would like to take me up on this offer.

Note: During this time, I am offering strictly telephone conversation courses to respect the order of President Emmanuel Macron who has issued a directive as you know that French population must remain under curfew for the next 15 days. If you would like to start or continue with English conversation lessons therefore, it will be strictly by telephone. I look forward to speaking with you, que même.
